Application for URI EMS admission 7/18/2014
Experience/Certs
While part of the US Naval Sea Cadets/Quonset Battalion training for 1.5 years and its required boot camp, I was exposed to various topics on safety, emergency and fire prevention. As a ranked E3 seaman I also got a Child CPR AED certification (expires 2015) in one of their scuba diving trainings.
Why are you interested?
My general interest in healthcare related topics started with my high school senior project for which I studied physical exercise techniques designed to lower the risks associated with coronary heart disease, type II diabetes and high blood pressure conditions. Recently I started in a new volunteering position at Kent Hospital where I shadow and provide support for a physical therapist in their rehabilitation department. I feel lucky having the chance to acquire clinical skills in a hospital environment but I also want the experience of the field work. In a college environment that might require one to be all cerebral, I want to make compassion and understanding bigger parts of what I do.
What will you contribute
By working or volunteering I gained in time a sense of pride that drives me to keep up with my work, be reliable and show camaraderie. Being also part of the US Naval Sea Cadets had me realize that whatever place we come from, we can build strong ties and treat everyone as a big family. It made me flexible and taught me how to become a devoted team player. A further acceptance into the URI Leadership Institute training this upcoming fall gives me hope that I will be ready for new responsibilities and serious teamwork.
At times I might like to quote Woody Allen – the famous film director; he is known to have said that “ninety percent of life is just showing up”; this is something else I would like to share.
What do you expect to gain
I am just starting college at URI, but as a hopefully future major in a healthcare discipline I would want to perfect my ability to keep calm and compassionate under times of pressure. I want to make many friendships and spend time with people that rid others of unnecessary pain and maybe occasionally, be part of a big life-saving event that gives back hope and has me coming back for more.
